In July 2013 Lincolnshire County Council granted Planning Consent for the drilling of an exploratory borehole on the Laughton Prospect in UK Onshore Petroleum Exploration and Production Licence PEDL209, located between the towns of Gainsborough and Scunthorpe.

The Laughton-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 1700 metres during February and March 2016.  The well did not find commercial hydrocarbons and has been plugged back to surface with a series of cement plugs under an approved “abandonment” scheme.  The site has now been fully restored to its original condition as agricultural land.
